Of Portuguese descent, Richard was the owner of Smokey's Dance Hall during World War II. He was rumored to have ties to the black market, including a contact in the Portuguese consulate. He had great affection for Martha and Fannie, calling them 'Francesca' and 'Marta'. The night of the 'Swing for Victory' dance in 1943, he was tending bar with one of his employees, Bruno.
By 2004, Richard was confined to a wheelchair, but still in great spirits.
