Nate Stallworth was a miner who worked alongside and was best friends with John Donovan. He was killed in a mining accident in 1948, leaving a widow, Alice Stallworth.
Nate's death prompted Donovan's involvement in fighting for better conditions and rights for miners; it is strongly implied in the episode that had proper equipment been provided by management, Nate would never have died.
