Detectives reopen the 2000 murder of an out-of-town cowboy who was murdered the night he and his band performed in Philly, after the gun that killed him is found. The case takes Lilly and Scotty on a road trip to the victim's hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, where they meet some colorful local law enforcement and learn the victim was on the verge of making it big.

Synopsis[]

November 13, 2000. A Tennessee plated truck is heading north to Philly. It carries a Tennessee-based band call "The Sugar Boys" for their performance at the Blue Star Lounge in Philly, where Johhny Cash made his first performance here. This made the boys with a high expectation about their performance later that night. However, later that night, one of the members of the band, Sugar Truck, was found shot dead outside the lounge. When a detective files away his cold case box to the vault, the radio news is reporting the ongoing controversies from the Presidential Election.

In present, Rush is surprised to see a Christmas tree, brought by Stillman, is on the table. Then Jefferies spot his former partner, Ed Garrett, is entering the Homicide. Ed brings a new evidence from a shooting case connects to a cold job in 2000 when a Tennessee cowboy was found shot dead outside a club. In fact, the shooter involved worked at the club where the victim was found. Ed asked the Cold Case team a favour to solve the case and hands the closed job to him as Ed wants to do something to improve his appraisal marks.

Stillman, Valens and Jefferies head to the vault to review the cold case. They realised Ed, the original detective responsible for this job in 2000, did not do so much investigation work to the murder of Truck Sugar, by only making interviews to the remaining members of the band, Ty Suger, the victim's brother, and Dusty Ray, the steal guitarist of the band. With the current shooter is in custody, Valens expects the job will be done by noon. Knowing Valens is not a favourite of country music, Stillman and Jefferies offers him some of their favourites.

Rush and Miller go the prison to interview Kylie, the one who used the gun to shoot her husband, for information about Truck's murder in 2000. She immediately offers a tip: Her husband Mitch, is the owner of the Blue Star Lounge and the gun who murdered Truck. But she claimed she just the witness of Truck's murder, not the doer. Instead, she finds out the relationship between Mitch and The Sugar Boys are quite saucy.

Flashback to 2000. When Mitch and Kylie greets The Sugar Boys outside the lounge, Mitch tells them a shocking news, he is planning to place another band in LA instead The Sugar Boys for the upcoming show, which the band is really pissed to hear that. During the negoitation, Mitch threatens the band he will use his gun if the band is not going to comply. However, Truck, confronts Mitch by grabbing him and tell him they have nothing to afraid off. So Mitch stick the schedule to keep The Sugar Boys for the show.

Vera and Jefferies interviews Mitch for what he knows about Truck's murder. He claimed his gun was stolen by someone, that he did nothing that caused Truck's death. What is more, he shares the detectives a new lead: There's something inside the band, especially the guitarist, Dusty, who did not show up a while when the rest of the band are preparing for the show.

Notes[]

  • The title of this episode refers to the two major American political parties: Republicans (Red) and Democrats (Blue). These colors are also often coordinated to states depending on which party is usually the most victorious. Also, at the time the story takes place, there is a dispute over the winner of the presidential election, which could be seen as a metaphor for the turmoil and uncertainty within the band.
  • The romantic subplot is the same as in "Willkommen".

Music[]

All songs featured in this episode were all performed by Tim McGraw, except "Counting My Lucky Stars Tonight" which was performed by Larry Bagby. Note that they're also in a country style format to fit in with the episode.
